Status is billed once a year, by credit or debit card only — there's no digital wallet involved. Payments are processed by PayPal: card details are typed into fields hosted by PayPal and go straight to them, so we never see or store your card number or security code. Where your card issuer supports it, adding a card runs a 3-D Secure check with your bank; we keep only what we need to show your method — for example "Visa •••• 4242, exp 11/28".
An account has one card. Only account members with permission to manage billing (the Owner and Admins, or a custom role that includes it) can add, replace or remove it, and we email the account holder whenever the card is added, replaced or removed after your account is set up, so a change you didn't make is easy to spot. (The card you use to start your trial is named in the trial confirmation email instead.)
Add a card
- Open Billing in the dashboard and choose the Payment card tab (or the trial activation screen, if you're starting a trial).
- Click Add card and enter the name, number, expiry and security code.
- Click Save card. Where your card issuer supports it, your bank verifies the card with 3-D Secure — that check is between you and your bank; no money is taken.
The new card is the card we charge. If you already had a card, adding a new one replaces it: the new card is saved first, then the old one is removed from Status and from PayPal's vault.
Paying for your plan
A card is required to start a trial, but it isn't charged during the trial. On the day your trial ends, we automatically charge your card the annual price of the plan you chose, unless you cancel the trial before then, in which case it ends on its end date and you're not charged — we email you a reminder 3 days before the charge. Free trials are limited to one per email address and one per card in any 12-month period, and three per IP address in any 30-day period; if you're not eligible, you can still subscribe and your card is charged right away.
Once you're subscribed, when you upgrade, add capacity or resume a suspended plan, the charge goes to your card and the confirmation window shows the amount first.
Occasionally PayPal takes a little longer to confirm a payment. The invoice then shows Processing and your plan is active straight away; we email a receipt once the payment completes.
Every successful payment gets an emailed receipt, and invoices can be downloaded as PDFs from the Invoices tab.
Automatic renewal
Your plan renews automatically every year until you cancel:
- At renewal we charge your card the plan's current price in your billing currency (Canadian dollars if your billing country is Canada, US dollars otherwise), plus GST/HST for Canadian addresses; add-ons renew at the current add-on rates. We need your billing country to charge you.
- We email you 14 days and 3 days before each renewal with the date and amount. If your card expires before then, or you have no card on file, the email says so.
- To turn off automatic renewal, cancel from the Plan tab. There is no immediate cancellation: your plan stays active until the end of the term you've paid for, then expires, and you won't be charged again. You can undo the cancellation any time before then.
- There are no refunds or partial refunds for cancelling, downgrading or unused time. If you think there's a billing error, contact support.
If a payment fails
Renewal: if a renewal is declined, the account is suspended straight away and the Owner is emailed once — there are no repeated retries. Monitoring is paused, but nothing is deleted. To restore it, add a working card on the Payment card tab and click Resume on the Plan tab.
Trial conversion: if the automatic charge at the end of your trial is declined, monitoring is paused and the account is suspended, and we retry the charge once, 24 hours later. You can also restore it sooner by adding a working card and resuming, the same way as a declined renewal.
While an account is suspended or cancelled, its public status pages show a "temporarily unavailable" notice instead of your checks.
Replace or remove your card
- Replace card saves a new card and then removes the old one, from Status and from PayPal's vault. There is only ever one card on the account.
- Remove card deletes your card from Status and from PayPal's vault. While a charge is coming — your trial is about to convert, or your plan is set to renew — the button is hidden: replace your card instead, or cancel your subscription first. Once nothing is due (for example once you've cancelled and the term has ended) you can remove it.
Removing your card never cancels your plan, and cancelling your plan doesn't delete your saved card, so re-subscribing later is one click.
